  11. <p>   Climate and clothing: Paramaribo and the littoral are warm
  12. and humid all year. Lightweight, wash and wear clothing is
  13. recommended.
  14. </p>
  15. <p>   Customs: A visa is required for US citizens. Tourists may be
  16. asked to show onward tickets, necessary travel documents, or
  17. sufficient funds for their stay.
  18. </p>
  19. <p>   All foreign exchange being carried must be declared on
  20. arrival and departure, except for diplomats assigned to the
  21. post. Each adult nonresident of Suriname must exchange US $280
  22. at the port of entry in Suriname. Children under 12 must
  23. exchange US $140. Those who intend to remain only briefly may
  24. be allowed to exchange US $23 for each day they will be in
  25. Suriname.

  27. <p>   Health: Medical services are adequate for most purposes,
  28. although some essential medicines are no longer readily
  29. available. Malaria and other tropical diseases are endemic but
  30. occur more frequently outside the capital. Paramaribo's tapwater
  31. is potable.

  33. <p>Telecommunications: Domestic and international telephone and
  34. telegraph connections are fair but expensive. Paramaribo is two
  35. hours ahead of eastern standard time.
  36. </p>
  37. <p>   Transportation: Overland travel is restricted because there
  38. are few roads and bridges, and large parts of the country
  39. outside the littoral are accessible only by light plane and
  40. canoe. Several flights a week connect Paramaribo with other
  41. Caribbean and Latin American centers. There are four weekly
  42. flights to Amsterdam during peak vacation periods and two weekly
  43. flights otherwise. Paramaribo has bus and taxi services.
